Choosing an Adult Family Home
Placing an individual who can no longer manage living independently, can be a very stressful and tedious undertaking. There are many factors to consider in making this decision. Some of these concerns such as cost, quality of care, and safety will be large factors in your decision-making process.
The following series of observations, questions and links have been compiled to help you in the evaluation of an adult family home. A "Printer-Friendly" version of the observations and questions on this page is available so you can take it with you when visiting a prospective AFH.
Plan to spend some time at the facility and make the following observations.
- What is the general atmosphere of the facility?
- Is the facility well maintained?
- Does the facility meet reasonable standards of cleanliness?
- Is the facility free from offensive odors?
- What is the appearance of the residents?
- Are the residents treated with dignity and respect?
- Are the residents actively participating in life around them?
- Is there a secure area available for residents who wander?
- Is a copy of emergency procedures clearly posted throughout the facility?
Ask the following questions.
- Does the home have a current unencumbered license from the state?
- What is included in the basic daily or monthly rate?
- What is the notification process for changes in rates and for late charges?
- What are the billing procedures for private-pay residents?
- If a resident is hospitalized, how long will the facility hold their bed?
- What activities are available?
- Will the resident have his/her own room?
- Are specialized services available?
- Will the resident be able to bring his/her own things?
- Is transportation available and who pays for it?
- What are the procedures for emergency situations?
- What are the policies for visitation, pets, etc.?
Print the list of observations and questions.
